Conceptualizing Political Geography in the Information Age

On the afternoon of Friday, August 30, the Reischauer Center sponsored “Conceptualizing Political Geography in the Information Age”, a workshop on political geography at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association.

The event was held at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., and included a diverse configuration of senior and junior scholars of varied nationalities drawn from a wide range of institutions both in the US and abroad. Professor Kent Calder introduced the subject, with brief remarks on “Bringing Geography Back In”. Dr. Jacopo Pepe of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and Jaehan Park of Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS discussed how the study of political geography has evolved in theoretical terms since World War II, followed by a presentation by Yun Han of Johns Hopkins and the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies on the political geography of the European Union. This session represented the first time that Political Geography has been taken up as a workshop topic at APSA, and will lead to a Reischauer Center publication.
