Economic Security: A Cold Winter is Coming

On November 22nd, Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies Director, Kent Calder, participated in a panel at the Global Leaders Forum 2022 titled ‘Economic Security: A Cold Winter is Coming’, where he discussed the energy crisis and its associated supply chain vulnerabilities, Eurasia’s transformation, and the changing geoeconomic parameters we are seeing at the international level.

In his presentation, Dr. Calder addressed global inflation and interest rates spiked by US-China tensions, EU-Russia estrangement, Sino-Russian entente, and other supply chain trends. He also discussed global warming and the extensive use of fossil fuels in high-growth developing countries, the rising demand for globally traded commodities and their impact on commodity markets, and the short-term and long-term implications of the Ukraine War for the geopolitics of energy.
