German Chancellor Angela Merkel is awarded an honorary degree from Johns Hopkins University

On July 15, SAIS interim Dean Kent Calder and Johns Hopkins President Ron Daniels presented German Chancellor Angela Merkel with an honorary degree as Doctor of Humane Letters, in recognition of her global leadership and extraordinary human achievements.

Dean Calder delivered the citation, speaking to the significant positive impacts Chancellor Merkel has brought to Germany and the larger international community, and presented the Chancellor with her doctoral hood. In her remarks, Chancellor Merkel noted the tight bonds between the United States and Germany, and also spoke about the need to confront the COVID-19 virus. In concluding, she called for a continued sustainment of shared institutions, democracy, and values, as well as a commitment to the Paris Accords on Climate Change.
