Global Political Cities: Actors and Arenas of Influence in International Affairs

As part of the Tokyo Media Center’s “TMC Talks” during the 2020 Olympics, Dr. Kent Calder presented “Global Political Cities: Actors and Arenas of Influence in International Affairs” on July 24.

Drawing from his most recent book, Dr. Calder highlighted the growing role of cities in dealing with distinctive challenges of the future. He focused on two main dimensions of cities: civic leaders such as Yuriko Koike and Michael Bloomberg that have led the path on global agendas such as the environment and public transportation, and the second dimension of cities as brainstorming and networking centers that are reshaping future policy agendas. He concluded his presentation with an analysis of public health in the face of COVID-19, and how cities must strategically address future crises going forward.
