In Loving Memory of Professor William L. Brooks 🕊

On April 30th, we came together to celebrate the life of Dr. William “Bill” Brooks — a scholar, diplomat, teacher, mentor, and one of the kindest souls you could ever meet.

Bill dedicated his life to building bridges between the U.S. and Japan — from his years of service in the U.S. Department of State to his beloved classroom at Johns Hopkins SAIS. For over a decade, he inspired generations of students with his insight, passion, and deep humanity. Before that, he led the media analysis and translation unit at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, helping guide policy with clarity and cultural nuance.

But beyond the titles, Bill truly lived. He loved photography, tennis, nature, travel, good wine, and even better conversations. He brought joy and curiosity into every interaction, always making time for others — whether briefing a commander or mentoring a student.
His life was shaped by ikigai — the Japanese idea of living with joy and purpose.

As Dean James Steinberg said:
“His unwavering commitment to his students and kindness toward all left an indelible mark, not only on SAIS, but many institutions around the world.”

To know Bill was to be inspired. To work with him was to grow. His legacy lives on in all of us who had the privilege of learning from and with him.

Bill Brooks left behind a legacy of kindness, mentorship, and service that touched people all over the world. We remember him not just for what he did, but for who he was.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate his remarkable life. We believe his impact will continue to live on in each of us.
