The Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies sadly announces the passing of our esteemed colleague Bill Brooks on March 1, 2025. Professor Brooks was a devoted teacher with a quick wit, beloved of his students.
He inspired our work on US-Japan relations, from his arrival at SAIS in 2010, following a distinguished US government career, until last month. He continued to teach his beloved capstone course on “US-Japan Relations in Global Context”, amidst deepening physical adversity, until the very end.
Professor Brooks was a consummate scholar, author of three Reischauer Center monographs, as well as a dedicated teacher. He will be sorely missed.
The Reischauer Center will hold a memorial service for Professor Brooks on April 30 from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. in Room 820 at Johns Hopkins SAIS (555 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20001).
