Kishida’s New Capitalism: The Complementary Roles of Technology, Reskilling, and Mobility

On February 22nd, 2023, Dr. Robert Feldman, Senior Advisor at Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities and Senior Specially Appointed Professor at Tokyo University of Science from 2017-2022 visited the Reischauer Center via webinar, to offer his insights on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s “New Capitalism”.

Dr. Feldman began his presentation with a discussion on the foundations of capitalism, as well as its moral and cultural implications. Following that, he discussed the significant pillars of Prime Minister Kishida’s policy, focusing on the ‘Growth Strategies’ and ‘Distribution Strategies’ of New Capitalism. By assessing these policies, Dr, Feldman demonstrated Prime Minister Kishida’s increased emphasis on innovation, connectivity, economic security, and health. Moreover, Dr. Feldman argued that by distributing the economic gains from these policies towards children and the elderly, Japan can achieve a resilient and sustainable economy. In closing, Dr. Feldman emphasized that in order to implement these facets of New Capitalism successfully, relevant Japanese organizations will need to improve their information coordination policies.
