Peacekeeping in Northeast Asia: North Koreans in Russia and Implications for the United States and Japan

On Monday, March 4, 2019 the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies in cooperation with the U.S.-Japan Research Institute(USJI) hosted Dr. Aelia Lee from Waseda University.

In her seminar, titled “Peacekeeping in Northeast Asia: North Koreans in Russia and Implications for the United States and Japan,” Dr. Lee presented her research on North Korean migrant workers in Russia and their role in the development of Russia’s economy, particularly in its maritime provinces. She gave an in-depth description of life in Russia for North Korea’s migrant workers and discussed the effects of sanctions. The Q&A session which followed was interpreted into English, Japanese and Korean. Questions fielded from the audience concerned the economic conditions in Russia for migrant workers workers, and the continuing role of the United States in the region.
