Policy Innovation from Tokyo to the World: A Conversation with Governor Yuriko Koike

We were honored to welcome Governor Yuriko Koike of Tokyo to the Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) for a timely and insightful address titled “Policy Innovation from Tokyo to the World.”

Hosted by Dr. Kent Calder, the event explored Tokyo’s pioneering approaches to urban resilience, sustainability, and women’s empowerment as a driver of inclusive growth. Governor Koike also emphasized the rising importance of multi-city-lateralism—collaboration among global cities, as a powerful tool to confront transnational challenges such as climate change, urban disasters, and demographic shifts.

The Governor also engaged with SAIS students and research fellows and offered meaningful insights into the leadership and human-centered policymaking shaping Tokyo’s global role today.

Sincere thanks to Governor Koike and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for an inspiring exchange.
