Super Continent: The Logic of Eurasian Integration

On Tuesday, September 17, 2019, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS hosted a discussion of the latest book by Dr. Kent Calder, Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and International Cooperation at SAIS and Director of the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies.

Professor Calder’s new release, “Super Continent: The Logic of Eurasian Integration”, finds a growing degree of economic and political integration in Eurasia and argues for the continued importance of geography and space in global affairs despite the existence of modern modes of transportation and communication. Giving a short presentation and overview of the book, Dr. Calder cited Eurasia’s rising interdependence and shifting economic centers as evidence for his claims, while also noting the centrality and importance of China in the region’s development. Joining Dr. Calder onstage to discuss his work was Dr. Andrew Mertha, the George and Sadie Hyman Professor and Director of China Studies at SAIS. Dr. Mertha’s remarks included questions about China’s role in Eurasia’s future, and followed his discussion by expanding the conversation to the audience of scholars and students.
