Theorizing Regional Group Formation: Asia and Beyond

On September 28, 2018, Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies hosted a talk with one of our visiting scholars, Shintaro Hamanaka, from the JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) Institute of Developing Economies.

In his presentation titled, “Theorizing Regional Group Formation: Asia and Beyond,” Mr. Hamanaka introduced the key points of his Regional Group Formation Theory and examined cases of post-war regionalist projects in Asia in which Japan played a leading role.

A discussion followed afterward covering the Eurocentrism of International Relations Theory and the development of regional blocs, including their increasing role in trade and diplomacy.
