Manipulating Globalization: The Influence of Bureaucrats on Business in China

On September 27, 2018 Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies and the SAIS Faculty Research Forum welcomed Dr. Ling Chen, Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, SAIS, to discuss her new book, Manipulating Globalization: The Influence of Bureaucrats on Business in China.

Her work analyzes China’s bureaucratic dynamics during the country’s shift toward a service economy fueled by foreign investment. Dr. Chen sharply contrasts coalition relations in top-down versus bottom-up cities, bringing a fresh perspective to literature on international-domestic interactions and globalization.

Dr. Andrew Mertha lead the discussion, moderated by Dr. Kent E. Calder, which covered questions on local Chinese policy implementation, implications of US-China tariffs, and more.
