Effects of the Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami on Fukushima

On Wednesday, October 3, 2018, the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies welcomed Mr. Naomi Hirose, President of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Incorporated (TEPCO) from 2012-2017 to discuss the effects of the Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami on Fukushima.

His presentation described Fukushima in the aftermath of the accident and explained the methodical process of cleaning up nuclear radiation. Furthermore, Mr. Hirose emphasized TEPCO’s responsibility for the accident and spoke of the reforms he spearheaded as President of TEPCO. In his presentation, he outlined the future of TEPCO and underlined the importance of learning from past errors.
