Sino-Japanese Power Politics: Might, Money and Minds

On February 15, 2019, the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies hosted Dr. Giulio Pugliese, Professor of War Studies at King’s College London, to discuss his co-authored publication “Sino-Japanese Power Politics: Might, Money and Minds.”

In his seminar, Dr. Pugliese proposed that Sino-Japanese relations have essentially followed neo-classical realism along three dimensions of military power, economic strength, and public diplomacy. Both countries have balanced each other in action-reaction cycles, demonstrating the endurance of regional great power rivalry. Dr. Kent E. Calder, Vice Dean of Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS, moderated the following discussion, which featured questions regarding the prospects for Sino-Japanese cooperation, the impact of the incoming Japanese administration on Sino-Japanese relations, and security arrangements in the Asia-Pacific.
