U.S.-Japan Security Cooperation Conference: Sea Lane Security

The Reischauer Center’s most recent panel discussion held on October 8th, the “U.S.-Japan Security Cooperation Conference: Sea Lane Security“, analyzed ongoing maritime issues in the South China Sea and Indian Ocean.

The South China Sea Lanes panel included Ambassador Nobushige Takamizawa, former Ambassador of Japan to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, Admiral Michael McDevitt,former Rear Admiral in the US Navy, and Mrs. Lindsey W. Ford, the David Rubenstein Fellow at the Brookings Institute. The panel addressing Indian Ocean Sea Lane Security included Professor Gordon Flake, founding CEO of the Perth USAsia Centre at the University of Western Australia, Professor Hideshi Tokuchi, a visiting professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies, and Dr. Joshua White, Professor of South Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins SAIS.

The panels were moderated by Ambassador David Shear, Senior Advisor at the Reischauer Center and director of the Reischauer Center, Dr. Kent Calder. The panels sought to address potential US-Japan cooperation amidst rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, in addition to the role of the QUAD+ in mitigating conflict.
